    Standard printer for forms

    by coldrick » Mon May 19, 2008 1:56 pm

We have a number of users having a need to use the same form. The form is set up with a standard printer that is accessible to most users, but if a user without access to the standard printer opens the form, the form is automatically set to the new users default printer. Another user then opening the form has to set it back to the correct default printer.

To prevent this happening we tried setting all printing through Visual Builder on the server and supressing the print dialogue so that default printers couldn't be changed - problem was that faxes and e-mails were also getting queued to the server.

We are considering running Capital locally on each users computer and just accessing the database on the server. That way each user can have their own forms that will only be affected by their own actions.

Apart from the obvious having to maintain 6 sets of forms and install upgrades on 7 computers (including the server), are there any other problems running Capital locally on each computer?

Alternative methods that might work if there is a way to set them up:-

    1. Set a personal forms directory for each user

    2. Set hardcopy printing to go via VB on the server, but faxes and e-mails to be local.

    Are either of these possible?

    Rgds

There is no point in installing CAPITAL onto each user's local folder. You may not achieve nothing practical by doing this, as all these individual copies of CAPITAL still need to point back to the central shared database folder.

If the form selects the default printer because the specified printer is not available to that particular user, it should not be necessary for the next user to change the specified printer back. The printer that the form selects is only changed if the form is edited and re-saved.

Done some further investigation. Looks like the problems have been due to forms being designed and modified in a separate area from where the forms are being used. We will make a note that the the default printer should be set using the local computer where the printer isn't networked.

    Thanks.
